The London Stock Exchange plans to launch an overnight trading venue in the first half of 2027, extending access to selected securities beyond conventional market hours as global exchanges respond to competition from cryptocurrency platforms that operate continuously.

The new venue, called LSE 24, will run separately from the exchange’s primary market. Its overnight session is expected to operate from 5 p.m. until 7:50 a.m. London time, with a 30-minute pause between 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. for end-of-day processing.

The main London market will retain its existing weekday schedule of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The planned structure therefore does not amount to uninterrupted 24/7 trading across all LSE-listed shares. Instead, the two venues would provide nearly continuous weekday access, subject to the processing break and other operational arrangements.

LSE 24 will initially offer exchange-traded products rather than individual company shares. The exchange has more than 2,600 listed ETPs, including funds linked to UK and US equities, bonds, commodities and other assets.

Overnight Venue Targets Global Investors

The separate structure allows the LSE to test demand for extended trading without immediately changing the operating model for thousands of individual equities. ETPs are generally simpler to introduce into an overnight environment because they provide diversified exposure and can be supported by market makers referencing actively traded underlying assets.

Longer sessions could benefit investors in Asia and other regions whose daytime hours overlap poorly with London’s regular market. They could also allow traders to react more quickly to company announcements, geopolitical developments, economic data and price movements occurring after the European close.

Retail investors have become accustomed to broader trading access through cryptocurrency exchanges, which remain open during nights, weekends and public holidays. Digital-asset platforms have also expanded into tokenized equities, prediction contracts and other products traditionally associated with securities or derivatives markets.

The LSE’s initiative reflects recognition that fixed regional sessions are becoming less aligned with a market in which information and risk move continuously. However, overnight trading may initially have lower volumes, wider spreads and weaker price discovery than established daytime sessions, particularly before institutional participation develops.

Global Exchanges Extend Operating Hours

The London plan follows similar initiatives in the United States. Nasdaq has pursued nearly round-the-clock weekday trading, while the New York Stock Exchange, Cboe and CME Group have also explored or developed extended-access models across equities and derivatives.

Euronext Chief Executive Stéphane Boujnah said in May that the European exchange operator would be prepared to respond if sufficient demand for 24/7 trading emerged. The competitive pressure is therefore broader than crypto alone and includes efforts by exchanges to attract international order flow across time zones.

For London, the project also arrives amid concerns about the competitiveness of its capital markets. The city has experienced a prolonged slowdown in initial public offerings, while several prominent companies have selected New York for primary or additional listings.

LSE 24 will not directly resolve the shortage of major flotations, but it could make London-listed products more accessible to global investors and demonstrate that the exchange is adapting its infrastructure.

The eventual impact will depend on liquidity, market-maker participation, settlement arrangements and regulatory approval. Its launch nevertheless marks a significant shift toward a market structure in which traditional securities increasingly approach the continuous availability long associated with crypto.
